Registration and Voting
All elections, including those for the school districts, are held at the Chester Township Hall. You must be registered to vote 30 days prior to an election in order to vote.
You can register to vote at any Secretary of State office, at the Ottawa County Clerk’s office or at the Township office. You can also register to vote by mail; however, you would not be eligible to receive an absentee ballot until your signature has been verified in person with the Township Clerk. For more information on elections, please check out the Secretary of State’s website at http://www.michigan.gov/sos and click on the “Elections in Michigan” button.
Upcoming elections are listed on the calendar of events in the Township newsletters and also on our website under “Special Notices”. If you have any questions, please contact the Township Clerk.
Effective November of 2007, voters will be required to provide a valid photo ID prior to being issued a ballot. Anyone who does not have an ID may sign an affidavit attesting that he or she is not in possession of the required identification.
Due to a recent court ruling, applications for absentee ballots will no longer be automatically mailed to voters over 60. Applications are available by contacting the township office or by following this link: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/AbsentVoterBallot_105377_7.pdf
Print out the application and mail or deliver the completed form to the Township Office. Ballots are available approximately 30 days prior to an election. Please allow enough time for your application to be processed, your ballot mailed to you and returned to the office. The Clerk’s office is open on Saturdays prior to every election to allow for last minute absentee voting.
Voters who are at least 60 years of age, or are permanently disabled may request to be put on a permanent absentee list.
